Lucy Muthoni Kambuni SC, EBS

Lucy Muthoni Kambuni SC, EBS, a distinguished Senior Counsel, has over 38 years of legal expertise in corporate, commercial, constitutional, and elections law. She holds a Master’s in Public International Law from the University of Nairobi and has built a career defined by exemplary service in both the public and private sectors.

Professional and Advisory Roles
Lucy is a current member of the Advisory Committee on Nominations of Judges of the International Criminal Court, contributing her vast experience to shaping the future of global justice. She previously held the role of Vice Chair at the Law Society of Kenya and was a founding member of the East Africa Law Society. Her dedication to legal education saw her serve as a lecturer at the Kenya School of Law and Kenyatta University School of Law.

Throughout her career, Lucy has been instrumental in various judicial inquiries and tribunals, often serving on panels investigating the conduct of judges. Her legal acumen also guided her as a member of the Employment and Labour Relations Rules Committee.

Board Memberships and Leadership in Public and Private Sectors
Lucy has served on numerous boards in the public sector, including the Commission for University Education, Council of Legal Education, NGO Council, Tourism Trust Fund, and Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology. Her contributions extend to the private sector, where she has been a board member with the Kenya Private Sector Alliance, Zamara Fanaka Retirement Fund, and Mater Hospital.

Notable Contributions and Task Force Engagements
Lucy has played a significant role in government task forces, including the Task Force on Devolved Government, the Working Committee advising on the International Criminal Court cases involving Kenyan citizens, and the Task Force on developing policies for legal education and training in Kenya. She served as Lead Assisting Counsel for the Commission of Inquiry into the Petition to Suspend the Makueni County Government and for the investigation into the 2012 crash of Helicopter 5Y-CDT in Ngong.

Her involvement in national inquiries is further highlighted by her role as a Commissioner on the Independent Review Commission (Kriegler Commission), which investigated Kenya’s 2007 general elections following a peace settlement brokered by Kofi Annan and the Panel of Eminent African Personalities.

Community Engagement and Professional Memberships
Lucy is currently a member of the Council of Elders and Honorary Secretary at Nairobi Baptist Church. She maintains active memberships in the Law Society of Kenya, East Africa Law Society, and the National Bar Association (U.S.A).
